In each year, an estimation of more than eight million tons of plastic gets accumulated in the oceans and even more accumulates littering the natural environment on land. The world has now produces more than 380 million tonnes of plastic every year, which could end up as pollutants, entering our natural environment and oceans. This plastic pollution will destroy the livelihood of many terrestrial and is destroying many aquatic organisms life.

Industry experts expect that by 2050, we will be producing three times as much plastic as compare to today's quantity of plastic and on the volume basis, there will  be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans.

How Plastic Pollution Affects Nature?

Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic objects and particles in the Earth's environment that harshly affects humans, wildlife and their habitat.

And, plastic takes too long time as plastic bottles take up to 450 years to decompose in landfill.

It threatens ocean healths, the health of marine life, food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and it is also contributing to climate change.

Chlorinated plastic can release harmful and toxic chemicals into the surrounding soil, which can then seep into our groundwater or other surrounding water sources, and also the ecosystem. This can cause a range of potentially harmful and toxic effects on the species that drink water.

"The most environmentally friendly product is the one you didn't buy." - Joshua Becker, founder of Becoming Minimalist

The word "plastic" to which we all are familiar with. we can also estimated the worst influence of it in our future life but the usage of plastic in our daily life is increasing day by day.

Packaging was the dominant use of primary plastics with 42 percent of plastic entering the use phase. Building and construction was the second largest sector utilizing 19 percent of the total.

Rwanda became the world's first 'plastic-free' nation in 2009, 10 years after it introduced a ban on every plastic bags and plastic packaging.

And, Of the amount of plastic that has been produces as waste, only 9 percent has been recycled and the vast majority is accumulating in landfills or sloughing off in the environment as litter that is 79 percent of the total wasted plastic.

According to statistics, China with 59,079,741 tons, United States with 37,825,550 tons and Germany with 14,476,561 tons has recorded as top countries with the most plastic pollution.

"It is the worst of times but it is the best of times because we still have a chance." - Sylvia Earle, marine biologist

"Psychology mentioned regarding the impact of sunshine on human that it will improve mood and stabilize our circadian rhythms (physical, mental, and behaviuoral changes that follow a 24-hour cycle, helping us to get a better night sleep. Light-weight additionally decreases depression scores and even increase cognitive performance (like multiple mental abilities) such as reaction time and activation. However having or using something beyond the need leads to contamination or pollution. Similar case is additionally having with light. Using light-shine in excess,in wrong way or without necessity leads to light pollution."

How I wonder where you are?

Up above the smoke and lights

Of spoiled Earth and polluted skies.

Light pollution is the presence of unwanted, more than adequate amount of light from artificial source. It not only disrupts the natural patterns of wildlife but also contributes to the increase in carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Light pollution disrupt human sleep and make unclear and difficult to see the stars in the night sky.

It also affects the health and safety of humans and wildlife. It affects human life as it disrupting our circadian rhythms, and generally contributing to sleeping disorder.

Light pollution also contributes to climate change by absorbing excess heat into air. "Lights have numerous effects" ~ Ffrench Constant says.

High levels of lighting due to light pollution may indeed provide excess light to increase photosynthesis and plant growth.

Studies show that light pollution is also affecting animal behaviors such as migration patterns, wake and sleep habits and habit formation. Lets look on an example of sea turtles and birds who guided by moonlight during migration get confused, lose their way and often die due to light pollution.

Studies discussed that how marine animals responds to bright fringe panels submerged under water off the coast of Whales. Fewer filter feeding animals, such as the sea squirt, made their habitat near the lighting panels. That mean the light from passing ships etc. is altering marine ecosystem.

What are the main cause of light pollution?

Light pollution is caused by using outdoor lights when and where they are not necessary to use. Unshielded designed outdoor light in residential, commercial, and industrial outdoor contributes 50% of its luminous to light pollution by emitting more than 50% of their light skyward or sideways.

What are main types of light pollution?

Light Trespass is called when light extends into an area where it is not wanted or necessity is not required like a streetlight illuminating nearby bedroom window.
Glare is excessive brightness that can cause visual uneasiness like while driving.
Light Cluster is bright, confusing and number of grouping of light source as in Times Square in New York City, New York.

How do we prevent light pollution?

Because of luminous pollution, birds get confused during migration and lose their way. As birds are affecting from this badly, hence many cities in different countries have adopted a "Lights Out" program to turn off building lights during bird migration.

There are several organisations working to reduce light pollution such as an U.S. based International Dark Sky Association (IDA), formed in 1988 to prevent natural night sky. IDA educates the public and certified parks and other places that have worked to reduce their light emissions. Till 2021, IDA listed 20 dark sky reserves on their site.

More people are getting aware with consequences of light pollution and take measures to prevent it. Many states have adopted legislation to control outdoor lighting, and manufacturers have designed and produces highly efficiency light sources that save energy and to reduce luminous pollution.
